  KENT STATE UNIVERSITY’S PH.D. PROGRAM IN COUNSELOR EDUCATION AND SUPERVISION

  The faculty members in the Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) program at Kent State University are pleased to accept applications to our CACREP-accredited Ph.D. program in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES). Applicants can find information about the program at https://www.kent.edu/ehhs/ldes/ces/counselor-education-and-supervision-phd and can begin their application process at this webpage by clicking on “Apply Now.” Complete applications for Fall 2025 admission are due February 1, 2025.

  The mission of the CES program at Kent State is to prepare research-informed, culturally intentional, and ethically sound counselor educators, administrators, and advanced clinicians. We prepare Ph.D. graduates who are outstanding at conducting research, supervising, teaching, and providing leadership and advocacy to the counseling profession. 

  Below are some Kent State Points of Pride:

  • Onsite Counseling Center that provides over 4000 hours of service annually to students and the community. Doctoral students work and train in the center as part of their educational program.
  • Our doctoral internship allows the student to select from the five CACREP doctoral areas and tailor an internship that suits their career objectives. 
  • Faculty are heavily involved in professional associations with leadership roles in ACA, CSI, ACES, AARC, ASGW, IARTC, Regional ACES, and the Ohio Counseling Association (and its divisions). We mentor our students to become professionally involved and know how to connect students to professional engagement opportunities. 
  • Kent State CES is actively engaged with professional and client advocacy programs and national initiatives related to D.E.I. & Anti-racism.
  • Our doctoral graduates also have served in leadership positions such as President of ACA, President of ACES and Editor of the Counselor Education and Supervision journal. 
  • Current CES faculty also have served as ACES President, North Central ACES President, CSI International President, ACES Executive Council member, President of the Ohio Counseling Association, and many other leadership positions.
  • Doctoral students are provided two advisors that co-advise throughout the curricular phase AND dissertation phase of the PhD to help actualize your research pursuits
  • Kent State CES doctoral program has a strong history of considerable international student enrollment and international work through the EHHS Read Center for International and Intercultural Education  
  • Doctoral Graduates from our Ph.D. degree program have secured employment as counselor educators in programs across the US and in Ohio, and also as agency clinical directors, and private practitioners. 
  • Our College of EHHS has a Research and Evaluation Bureau which provides dissertation students with research support (e.g., transcription services, data entry, computer consultation for programming and data analysis)

  A number of graduate assistantships for new full-time students will be available for Fall 2025. These positions include a $16k stipend, nine-month tuition waiver, stipend for health insurance and require 20 hours of work per week.

  Our 12-member full-time core faculty reflect diverse personal and professional backgrounds and scholarly agendas, such as: professional identity and advocacy, teaching and supervising in CES, suicide assessment and prevention training, crisis and trauma work, multicultural and international counseling, career development of marginalized populations, creativity in counseling, counseling sexual minority clients, rehabilitation counseling, counseling individuals with substance use disorders, school counseling, and motivational interviewing.

  Session Description: Client/Student non-suicidal self-injury is a common presenting issue that counselors are often uncomfortable navigating. Self-injury invites multiple risk-related issues, and counselors can benefit from learning more about how to manage self-injury. This presentation will focus on important information that counselors need to know when working with those who self-injure. An emphasis will be placed on risk-assessment, ethics, and legal considerations.

  • Learn about legal and ethical issues associated with counseling clients/students who self-injure

  The OCA Leadership Certificate Program (LCP) is an 8-week experience that is a FREE membership benefit for any graduate student, new professional, or seasoned professional discerning a possible future leadership role or who may already be serving in a position. LCP equips leaders with the most important tools and information they need to successfully hold a leadership position in OCA. Participants learn how to strengthen the effectiveness of a division/chapter/committee by applying best practices in successive leadership and through succession planning. They meet and network with their fellow participant leaders and receive mentorship and guidance for getting involved and helping to move the work of OCA forward.

  
  

  Except for two 1 hour required in person Zoom gatherings, LCP allows participants to move through the program at their own pace through a series of pre-recorded learning modules. Modules are taught by past and present OCA leaders who share their experiences and insights related to some of the most significant aspects of being a leader in our association. All in person and recorded modules must be completed within the same series for which the participant is registered. The total time commitment is approximately six hours and participants receive a certificate of completion and recognition at the All Ohio Counselor’s Conference.
