Presentation Title:

Timely Issues Related to Suicidality and Ethical Practice

Presenter Name(s), School or Business, Contact Info:

              Jason McGlothlin, Ph.D., LPCC-S, OCA President-Elect

Description of Presentation for Program:

New and seasoned clinicians alike rarely get substantial training on suicide assessment practices. Clinicians have also identified assessing suicidal clients as being one of the most stressful parts of clinical practice. Now with the difficulties of the pandemic and telehealth, clinicians need to now, more than ever before, be aware of current and ethical issues in treating and assessing suicidality. This presentation will include (1) information on new trends in suicide and subtle nuances that can be assessed that might be predictive of suicidal behavior; (2) ethical practices in telehealth related to suicidal individuals; and (3) initial training on a evidenced based model of suicide assessment that is based on more than 30,000 suicidal individuals over an 21 year period. This presentation will help attendees gain more knowledge about suicide assessment practices, learn about a new evidenced based model of suicide assessment, and contextualize suicide assessment in long term clinical practice, documentation and avoiding malpractice in a telehealth setting.
