Process Addictions:

Emerging Models for a Changing World

Joshua Francis, Ph.D.

Location: Waybridge Training Center

10945 Reed Hartman Hwy, Suite 302

Cincinnati, Ohio 45242

Process or Behavioral (non-substance) addictions are slowly emerging in the counseling literature and clinical practice as equally powerful and debilitating phenomena as chemical addictions. Technological advances over the past few decades have carved an enormous path into the minds and behaviors of our clients and opened an incredible buffet of outlets for unresolved emotional issues. In contrast, people remain biological creatures attempting to meet certain needs; resulting in an evolutionary mismatch between our human biology and technology. Counselors must be aware of these emerging trends and grow and adapt alongside of the lightening-fast advances of modernity.

Objectives:

-Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the role of technology and its evolutionary mismatch with human biology, fostering the way for compulsive use and addiction.
-Participants will learn about the most common process/behavioral addictions, their etiology and physiology, and the common cycles of addictive behavior.
-Participants will learn pragmatic methods to treat process/behavioral addictions by using and promoting a holistic wellness model with clients.

Joshua Francis, Ph.D. has over 20 years of clinical counseling experience working in community mental health, hospitals, schools, and private practice.  He is licensed as a Professional Clinical Counselor, Supervisor (LPCC-S) and Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor, Clinical Supervisor (LICDC-CS) in the State of Ohio. Dr. Francis has owned and operated a private counseling and consultation practice and is an assistant professor of clinical mental health counseling at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Francis’ clinical specialties and areas of research include child and adolescent mental health, marriage and family therapy, high conflict divorce, trauma, counselor ethics, counselor wellness, evolutionary/primal mental health, and substance and process/behavioral addictions. He is a frequent presenter at local, state, and national conferences. When not serving in a professional role, he loves to spend time with his spouse, Jana, and their five children: Sophie (15), Felix (13), Hazel (11), Ruby (9), and Henry (6).
