Program Description:   

How can clinicians balance between assessing for and addressing historic trauma in counseling, to ground, normalize, and validate the experience while neither disempowering or labelling survivors as broken? This presentation will focus on a clinical understanding of how historic trauma and resilience present in clients, may be assessed for, and intervened with therapeutically and intentionally to promote healing. Being trauma-informed needs to go beyond striving to provide safety and trustworthiness in the counseling relationship, counselor education classroom, and supervision, to recognize and assess historic trauma and its manifestations. This presentation will assist students, counselor, supervisors, and educators to begin to do this.
