The practice and delivery of clinical and substance abuse counseling have transformed in response to the declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020. The current climate has called for unique modalities to meet clients' needs while noting the enactment of improved methods to ensure the health and wellness of all parties involved. Brown (2020) has noted the increased use of teletherapy by clinicians in various disciplines, for example, mental health and substance abuse counseling, to maintain continuity of care. Substance abuse counseling has witnessed a drastic expansion of teletherapy services over the past year and a half, a benefit for a community at higher risk for relapse and other life stressors known to exaggerate during crucial times (Bolin & Kurtz, 2018). While the need remains, of more significant concern would be an exploration into the clinical supervision of such services, a practice that aims to protect the clients from harm while also ensuring clinical counselors' effective and ethical practices.
While teletherapy has been utilized and respected within counseling, this workshop will examine the clinical supervision of these services. This session will highlight challenges and barriers faced while also identifying effective supervision strategies that can enhance supervision and, therefore, counseling services for the substance use population. Attendees will be provided with strategies for success while also being educated about potential pitfalls that may accompany this modality.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
Identify barriers and challenges for clinical supervisors who supervise counselors working with the substance abuse population using teleservices.
Identify ethical implications for clients and counselors due to ineffective supervision.
Understand practical resources and strategies for clinical supervision that can ensure adequate supervision with consideration for this modality.
