In March of 2020, the World Health Organization, declared that COVID-19 was a pandemic, therefore enforcing social distancing rules that worked to limit the provision of in-person mental health and substance abuse services (Burgoyne & Cohn, 2020). The current climate has presented unique challenges for individuals with substance abuse disorders and those in recovery. With this mandate, providers were forced with the reality of identifying methods to maintain continuity of care for their clients, while being mindful of health risks and taking necessary safety precautions for all parties.

While teletherapy has been utilized and respected within the field of counseling, the recent pandemic (COVD-19) has emphasized the benefits of these services in efforts to maintain contact and provide necessary services to clients. This workshop will examine the need for creative and evidenced based treatment methods, while also identifying barriers impacting effective treatment for the substance use population.  Attendees will be provided with strategies for success with engaging this population through a teletherapy modality.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • 1.     Identify heighted risk factors for this population (i.e., relapse, contamination, financial).
  • 2.     Understand common barriers to treatment engagement via the teletherapy platform.
  • 3.     Learn practical resources and strategies using teletherapy when working with substance abuse clients.

Agenda:

1:00-1:05 pm Introduction and overview

1:05-1:20 pm The utilization of technology in clinical practice with substance abuse clients

1:20-1:40 pm Identification of heighted risk factors for this population

1:40-2:00 pm Teletherapy based treatment barriers and implications for clinicians
