Description:

In order to effectively work with trans clients, professionals benefit from understanding the unique needs of this population to provide best care and implement clinically appropriate treatment strategies. This workshop will provide clinical mental health counselors with necessary tools to provide treatment for the specialized needs of trans populations in a clinical and educational setting. To facilitate this process, this workshop will challenge the participant’s understanding of certain social constructs that influence the relational experience of our world to promote greater understanding of trans and LGBTQ+ issues. Participants will learn useful assessment tools, interventions, and treatment strategies to implement in their clinical practice.

* Note that this workshop will not spend much time introducing terminology and beginner concepts, and most of the focus will be geared towards more intermediate and advanced clinical skill development. 

 

Goals and Objectives:

1. The participant will learn specific treatment needs of trans clients at each phase of transition.

Objective: Review primary concepts necessary for clinical treatment of trans populations.

Objective: Review the specific symptoms of gender dysphoria and compare to DSM-5 information.

Objective: Teach the stages of transition and compare to stages of change.

Objective: Teach treatment needs in each phase of transition.

 

 

2. The participant will learn assessment strategies and clinical interventions in treating trans populations.

Objective: Teach assessment strategies and their context to treatment.

Objective: Teach application of gender identity history timeline.

Objective: Teach affirmative goal setting strategies.

Objective: Identify clinical interventions appropriate for client’s phase of transition.

 

3. The participant will learn professional and ethical considerations noted in WPATH Standards of Care and how to integrate these standards in counselor practice with trans populations.

Objective: Review important concepts of WPATH Standards of Care and its clinical use. Compare WPATH to ICATH model of informed consent.

Objective: Identify ethical guidelines according to WPATH Standards of Care in treating trans* clients.

Objective: Teach important principles of collaboration with external providers.

 

Caitlin Yilmazer is a licensed professional clinical counselor and serves as the Chief Operating Officer of Waybridge Counseling, a private practice in Cincinnati. Caitlin began her specialization in LGBTQ+ populations during her undergraduate education, where she minored in Sexuality Studies at Wright State University. Caitlin has developed a specialty in working with trans and LGBTQ+ populations over the course of 8 years through academic and clinical experience. She has been a guest speaker for graduate level mental health courses at Northern Kentucky University, University of Cincinnati, Wright State University, and Union Institute and has provided numerous workshops in Dayton and Cincinnati. Caitlin developed a course for trans counseling and LGBTQ+ counseling for Xavier University's Department of Counseling.
