PAST WHO'S WHO IN MVCA

In the early 1960's a group of school counselors met periodically at the Montgomery County Board of Education office to share information from the State Department of Education relevant to counseling. From that group, several counselors felt a need to expand and provide a professional sharing opportunity to all counselors. Thus was formed the Miami Valley Personnel and Guidance Association. Julia Tieman, a school counselor, served as the association's first President and other early leaders included Helen Kovacs and Carolyn McAngel.

Anyone interested in advancing the discipline of counseling and human development was invited to join. The group was a Chapter within the Ohio Personnel and Guidance Association. Dues were minimal ($3.00 per year), and programming efforts consisted of dinner meetings with speakers, social hours and a lively newsletter. In those days, counselors had limited opportunities for networking and this group served a very useful purpose.

When the American Personnel and Guidance Association changed its name, so did state and local groups, and we became the Miami Valley Association for Counseling and Development. A few years later, another change resulted in our current name, the Miami Valley Counseling Association.
